GTN is rapidly taken up by erythrocytes [16,37], which do not express ALDH2. Localization of GAPDH at the erythrocyte membrane is well established [38], and the catalysis of nitrite release from GTN by membrane-associate GAPDH could serve to increase the local nitrite concentration and effect ATP export [18].
