2019, Advances in Biological RegulationCitation Excerpt :In 1991, Mahadevan et al. showed that the stimulation of quiescent mouse fibroblast cells with growth factors and mitogens resulted in the phosphorylation of H3 at multiple serine sites, and ultimately the induction of immediate-early genes, many of which are proto-oncogenes whose sustained expression can have profound effects on cellular growth (Mahadevan et al., 1991) (Fig. 1). The induction of these genes, which include Fos, Fosl1, Jun, c-Myc and EGR1, was observed to be rapid and transient without requiring protein synthesis for their expression (Bahrami and Drablos, 2016; Mahadevan et al., 1991; Thomson et al., 1999). The correlation between immediate-early gene expression and H3 phosphorylation led to a consensus that these two events are mechanistically linked and was termed the ‘nucleosomal response’ (Fig. 1).
