The MAOA isoform has high selectivity for serotonin (Murphy et al., 1979) and is localized primarily in brain (Westlund et al., 1993). VNTR polymorphisms of MAOA occur in both macaques and humans and can be classified as producing greater (high-MAOA) or less (low-MAOA) transcription of the MAOA gene (Newman et al., 2005; Wendland et al., 2006).

Immunohistochemical examination of substantia nigra showed that only a few neurons stained positive for MAO-A (Westlund et al., 1993), and very low MAO activity by histochemical technique was found in this area (Arai et al., 1998), although microdialysis experiments showed that DA is mainly metabolized by MAO-A in the rat striatum (the projection area of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons) in vivo (Wachtel & Abercrombie, 1994). The isoform localized to axon terminals may be different from that in perikarya and dendrites, if different populations of mitochondria are transported along the axons (Denney & Denney, 1985; Arai et al., 2002).
