It has been demonstrated that uncontrolled release of glutamate and its excitotoxic effects during ischemia/reperfusion may exacerbate the primary brain damage, especially in hippocampal neurons (Corradetti et al., 1984). Furthermore, two other scenarios are involved in increasing the damage to brain cells after ischemia, oxidative stress, and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS).
