Interestingly, those studies did either report no changes of stress hormones like cortisol or absent coherence between changes of TSPO and cortisol.

Our research on blood cells and the brain suggests that TSPO density changes due to acute and chronic stress are different in that acute stress often results in enhanced TSPO density, and chronic stress in decreased TSPO density (Karp, Weizman, Tyano, & Gavish, 1989; Weizman et al., 1994, 1987). In general it is thought that TSPO–steroid interactions form the basis for this general TSPO “stress response” function (Veenman & Gavish, 2012).

2005, Life SciencesCitation Excerpt :The presence of these receptors in blood cells, such as platelets or lymphocytes, which undergo the same regulation and changes as in other tissues, such as in the brain (Drugan et al., 1986), has offered a peripheral tool for studies in humans. Stressful situations, such as that of sitting for an exam (Karp et al., 1989) or a parachutee-training course (Dar et al., 1991) influence the density of the receptors in the sense that an acute stress seems to provoke an up-regulation, while a repeated stress provokes a down-regulation (Drugan et al., 1987; Okun et al., 1988; Hu et al., 1989; Jung-Testas et al., 1989; Purdy et al., 1990). There is also a growing amount of literature regarding the changes of peripheral BDZ receptors in some psychiatric disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Bidder et al., 1990; Bonuccelli et al., 1991; Rocca et al., 1991; Marazziti et al., 1994a, 2005; Gavish et al., 1996, 1999).
