2004, Biological PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :Although the possibility that DA acts as an endogenous allosteric modulator of D2 receptors cannot be excluded, it seems unlikely because most of the compounds that have been identified thus far as modulators are neither synthesized endogenously nor naturally encountered. Examples of endogenous allosteric modulators of G-protein coupled receptors are indeed relatively scarce and are mostly peptides or inorganic species such as Na+ and Zn2+ (Fillion et al 1996; Motulsky and Insel 1983; Neve 1991; Santos et al 1999; Schetz and Sibley 1997, 2001). Third, the possibility that DA causes an internalization of D2 receptors (internalization model) also has to be considered.
