Previous studies demonstrated that endogenous α-MSH-like peptides stimulate nerve outgrowth upon peripheral nerve injury (Plantinga et al., 1995), acting on myelinated nerve fibers and Schwann cells (Verhaagen et al., 1986). Interestingly, Mc4r is also expressed in the spinal cord and the dorsal root ganglia (Gautron et al., 2012) and responds to injury by upregulating its own expression (van der Kraan et al., 1999).
