Moreover, PSC is regarded as being identical with Tom 40 [14–16], the putative translocation pore of the outer membrane protein import machinery (translocase of the outer membrane, the TOM complex [17]). Thus, if the TOM complex indeed participates in the transport of metabolites in porin1-depleted mitochondria, interference between protein and metabolite transport through the outer membrane should occur, even in the presence of the protein encoded by the POR2 gene.
