Specifically, P-gp expression has been identified at both the luminal (Beaulieu et al., 1997; Virgintino et al., 2002; Bendayan et al., 2006) and abluminal membrane (Golden and Pardridge, 1999; Schlachetzki and Pardridge, 2003; Bendayan et al., 2006) of brain microvascular endothelial cells. Abluminal localization of P-gp has been identified on perivascular astrocyte foot processes (Golden and Pardridge, 1999; Schlachetzki and Pardridge, 2003) and on the abluminal plasma membrane of the endothelial cell itself (Bendayan et al., 2006).
