Dopamine is a neurotransmitter of particular interest for study of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying behavioral responses to social stress because dopaminergic dysregulation has been associated with such disorders as schizophrenia [3,15] and post-traumatic stress disorder [16,17]. The main source of dopamine to limbic regions of the brain, such as the nucleus accumbens, amygdala and infralimbic cortex, is the ventral tegmental area [18].
