Increased anal basal pressure in chronic anal fissures may be caused by overreaction of the anal-external sphincter continence reflex
2016, Medical HypothesesCitation Excerpt :Subsequently, overreaction of the AESCR and EAS hypertonia disappear, the anodermal blood flow increases, and CAF heals. Contrary to studies that demonstrated that Botox injections do not influence maximum anal sphincter pressure [7,20–23], more recent studies reported that Botox injections do lead to a significant decrease in EAS activity [24–31]. Furthermore, Botox is best known as a striated muscle relaxant by the reduction of acetylcholine from presynaptic axon terminals.
Anal fissure and stenosis
2013, Gastroenterology Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Despite this, injection of BTX into both the internal and external anal sphincter seems to be associated with sphincter relaxation and improvement of microcirculation.80,81 Gui and colleagues82 prospectively injected a total of 15 U of BTX into the IAS (2 injections laterally and 1 posteriorly). At 2 months, evaluation 7 of 15 had healed their AF.
