Oxytocin and sexual behavior

The neurohypophyseal hormone oxytocin has been implicated in many aspects of reproduction including sexual behavior. This review considers the hypotheses that oxytocin and/or the neural events surrounding the release of oxytocin may have behavioral effects during sexual arousal, orgasm, sexual satiety and other aspects of sociosexual interactions.

      When we started our vole research there was already evidence that sexual behavior was associated with the release of oxytocin into blood. This had been reported in several species, including male rats and rabbits and male and female humans (Carter, 1992). Our partner preference paradigm revealed that exogenous oxytocin, injected into the ventricles of the brain, could facilitate selective social behavior in both male and female prairie voles.
