Although the decreased ZO-1 levels in the plasma membrane, which has been correlated with a loosening of the monolayer of the endothelial cells [16,47], it is possible that the transcellular hypermeability detected after 72 h of reoxygenation with rt-PA may be related to the decrease in ZO-1 as transcellular and paracellular permeability are dynamically interacting parallel pathways [48]. Plasminogen-independent mechanisms involved in rt-PA effects on BBB have been widely investigated, including the activation of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP1) [3,5] or platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRα) [6], among others.
