2020, Obesity MedicineCitation Excerpt :Circulating leptin communicates the level of peripheral energy reserves to the hypothalamus thereby suppress the food intake or permit the energy expenditure. But elevated concentrations of endogenous leptin do not capable of preventing, or reversing, the accumulation of adipose tissue during, or after, the development of obesity due to leptin resistance (Considine and Caro, 1997). Increased circulating leptin, a marker of leptin resistance, is common in obese condition and is independently associated with IR ′in humans (Yao et al., 2010).

2015, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :In mammals, leptin is mostly secreted from adipocytes and acts at the hypothalamic level as a satiety or adiposity signal, inhibiting appetite. In humans and laboratory rodents, plasma leptin levels are positively correlated to fat mass and suggested to help maintain constant body weight and adiposity (Considine and Caro, 1997). However, in mammalian species exhibiting natural and/or seasonal adiposity, a dissociation of leptin levels and adiposity is often seen.
