Pharmacological regulation of cannabinoid CB2 receptor modulates the reinforcing and motivational actions of ethanol
2018, Biochemical PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :This assumption may explain the possible correlation between CB2r-mediated changes in ethanol consumption and motivation, and the opposite OPRM1 gene expression modifications obtained in this study. The endogenous cannabinoid system appears to be implicated in the vulnerability and development of ethanol consumption [2–4,67,68]. Real time PCR analyses revealed an increase of CB1r gene expression in AM630-treated animals while the treatment with JWH133 produced the opposite effect.

2011, Pharmacology Biochemistry and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Alcohol and Δ9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive constituent of marijuana, activate similar reward pathways (Gessa et al., 1998). There also exists cross-tolerance between alcohol and THC suggestive of the involvement of possible common pathway(s) (Basavarajappa and Hungund, 2002). One of the systems that are activated by both alcohol and CBs/THC is the endogenous cannabiniod (CB) system.
The effects of alcoholism on the human basolateral amygdala
2010, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Astrocyte loss may also contribute to the decreased expression of the glutamate transporters in alcoholic subjects or it may be possible that lower expression of these transporters pre-existed the alcoholism and contributed to it. Another factor may be ethanol-induced increases in the endocannabinoid anandamide (Basavarajappa and Hungund, 1999) which was shown to inhibit both GLAST and GLT-1 (Shivachar, 2007) as well as downregulate the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) (Basavarajappa and Hungund, 2002; Ortiz et al., 2004). CB1 receptors were downregulated in the alcoholic patients in this microarray study.
