There is evidence that the developmental trajectory of these enzymes is compromised when lungs are exposed to environmental toxicants during early postnatal life.4 Although much attention has been focused on the effect of a change in the early developmental environment, the period of adolescence may also be a time of susceptibility to environmental toxins because the lung is in the final phase of growth and maturation.
