All clinically used ARBs have high selectivity for AT1R over angiotensin II type 2 receptors (AT2R) as shown for azilsartan (Ojima et al., 2011), candesartan (Shibouta et al., 1993), eprosartan (Keiser et al., 1995), irbesartan (Cazaubon et al., 1993), losartan (Chiu et al., 1990a), olmesartan (Mizuno et al., 1995), telmisartan (Wienen et al., 1993) or valsartan (Criscione et al., 1993). Most ARBs have also high selectivity for AT1R as compared to molecular targets outside the RAS.

2004, Brain Research BulletinCitation Excerpt :Central administration (i.c.v.) of the peptide hormone angiotensin II (AII) stimulates thirst, blood pressure responses and a significant appetite for hypertonic sodium chloride solutions. This natriophilic action of AII has been proposed to be mediated by the AII type 1 (AT1) receptor [6,10,13,31,36,41] since it is blocked, like AII-induced increases in water intake and blood pressure, by central injection of high (mmol) doses of the non-peptide AT1 receptor-specific antagonists losartan (Los) [1,2,7,12,21,22,41] or irbesartan (Irb) [8,14,15]. In the anterior, medial, forebrain, which is involved in hydromineral regulation [17,37,39,40] and also contains receptors for AII [25], iontophoretic application of AII in Wistar rats produces either an increase in spontaneous activity (excitation) or a decrease in activity (inhibition), depending on the neuron [16,35,40].
