Initial studies exploring the role of ERβ were in the oncologic sciences, where trophic and developmental functions of estrogen signaling resulted in aberrant cell growth of breast cancer (Gotteland et al., 1995), prostate cancer (Ho et al., 2006), colon cancer (Campbell-Thompson et al., 2001), and ovarian cancer (Anderson et al., 2003), and in which ERβ loss of function seemed to play a critical role (Bardin et al., 2004; Brandenberger et al., 1998; Horvath et al., 2001; Konstantinopoulos et al., 2003). Since that time, roles for ERβ have been described in the development of the central nervous system (Jakab et al., 2001), for protection of the hippocampus (Zhao et al., 2004), in explaining gender disparities in the perception and modulation of pain symptoms (Dao and LeResche, 2000; Leventhal et al., 2006), and as playing a major role in anxiety and mood disorders (Bodo and Rissman, 2006; Imwalle et al., 2005; Walf and Frye, 2007).
