In a first series of experiments in amygdala-kindled rats, we substantiated that repeated induction of kindled seizures at suprathreshold stimuli (500 μA) with short interstimulation intervals (three to nine seizures within 8 hours) led to reduced seizure and afterdischarge duration, which lasted up to a week after the last seizure [46].

It has been demonstrated previously that “rapid kindling protocols”, as protocols which use short (5–30 min) interstimulus intervals have been termed, result in events different from conventional kindling (24 h interstimulus interval) which, at least in part, is due to the accumulation of postictal phenomena of the refractory period which follows each seizure [5, 15, 17, 19]. This certainly explains the delayed kindling development after rapidly recurring seizures [3].
