2022, Ageing Research ReviewsCitation Excerpt :As a result of inhibition of Na+/K+-ATP-ase activity, the extracellular transport of Na+ ions (Na+) decreases, leading to their accumulation in the cell and an increase in the intracellular concentration of Na+, even to levels of about 20–30 mM (Baartscheer et al., 1997; Babsky et al., 2002; Malloy et al., 1990). Intracellular Na+ concentration also increases as a result of increased influx of Na+ ions into the cell through the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) (Chapter 2.3.3) and through the membrane stretch-activated nonselective cation channel (NCC)(Anderson et al., 1995; Pike et al., 1993). The latter effect is most pronounced in peri-infarct zone cells subjected to mechanical stress due to the simultaneous action of surrounding cells contracting in the zone of normal perfusion and immobilized in the ischaemic zone.
