2021, Journal of Affective DisordersCitation Excerpt :Accumulating evidence indicates that glutamatergic transmission is a key target of inflammatory mediators (Haroon and Miller, 2017). Inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, have been shown to reduce the expression of glutamate transporters on glial cells (e.g. astrocytes) and increase glial glutamate release (Ida et al., 2008; Tilleux and Hermans, 2007). Cytokines’ well-documented effects on the kynurenine pathway might also have a role; this pathway generates quinolinic acid, which has been shown to stimulate presynaptic and astrocytic glutamate release (Guillemin, 2012; Schwarcz, 2016).
